Liking this band called Lapels. They're from Wakefield where a band called The Labels once hailed from. I was drunk perusing Myspace one night and happened upon The Labels and thought they were so awful I e-mailed them and told them just what I thought then woke up in the morning & groaned the groan of an extremely embarrassed man. I do that 2-3 days a week. I do so hope this isn't the same band because I think they've actually got something, a kinda laconic slacker indie thing with fuzzy, spiky harmonies & a slightly trashy discordant thing going on, a mucky, guttural pure sound that really makes me wanna go out to gigs. The drums sound like oil drums full of foam & the guitar just sounds evil, like it's being maxed to 10 through a Tandy amp borrowed off someones Dad. Then the b-side is more raucous & thrilling than the 'A' (but these bands don't care about all that "leader track" business! Another hit from the North!'Painted Skeletons/ Last Great Civilisation is a Ltd no'd 7" on Philophobia.
LAPELS
A1.Painted Skeletons
A2.Last Great Civilisation
This
is the first release from Wakefield based label Philophobia Music. It
is also the second release from Lapels. Following on from the success
of their debut EP ‘Five Reels From inside The Dream Platoniek’ – which
picked up plays from the likes of Clint Boon (XFM Manchester) and Alan
Raw (BBC Raw Talent) – the band have again worked with producer Jamie
Lockhart (Piskie Sits, The Tailors, The Research) on this double A side.
‘Painted
Skeletons’ finds Lapels sounding more epic than previously whilst ‘Last
Great Civilisation’ is a harder proposition with the bands most direct
recording to date.
In addition a new version early live
favourite ‘Forever Too Lonely To Smile’ will be available via email
upon purchase of the single.
