What we say about Microvictories, by Brassica
This record left our Brett feeling ecstatic.
Brassica's got a new thing out on Tartaruga packaged in their signature hand-stitched digipak loveliness, it's called Microvictories and we all think it's rather good. A lot of it reminds me of Semaphore-era Fridge, it's got a cool mixture of electronic and acoustic going on with lots of happy sounding melodies a la Boards of Canada. There's a good flow to things with those more structured tracks (often featuring some satisfying bass playing) complemented by funny little interludes with lots of weird noises, bubbling analogue bits and siren sounds, sort of like listening to a mashup of recordings from the Radiophonic Workshop. Bit of an odd one this album 'cos there's so much going on, but persevere and you'll be blessed with untold rewards. Just like that Bleeding Heart Narrative CD which you all loved. Brett x
What the label says about Microvictories, by Brassica:
microvictories is the debut full-length release from Brassica, the
project of Michael Anthony Wright. A collection of songs 'sculpted
from a scrapbook of experiments, improvisations, and reactions to
times and places', the album is a meeting point of analogue and
digital sounds. Intricately constructed and produced, the release
features various different instruments and electronics.
Drawing together disparate source material, microvictories displays
a love of sound itself, and the possibility of ordering and disordering
these sounds to create something new. Ranging from detailed sonic
textures to small electronic pop songs, Brassica has created a record
that reveals new layers and details with each listen.
The CD is packaged in a signature Tartaruga gatefold recycled
cardstock sleeve, screen-printed, hand-stamped and sewn together.
Available in a limited run of 200 numbered copies, each CD also
comes with a set of ten postcard-style inserts, litho-printed on thick
pulp board. These feature ten exclusive artworks by ten different
visual artists; each piece corresponding to a track on the album.
Available for purchase direct from the Tartaruga website and a few
select other sources, the album will also be available to borrow on a
new Tartaruga Library Loan scheme. Those wishing to try out the
album without purchasing it can sign up via the Tartaruga website.
They will then receive a copy of the album through the post, which
must be posted on to the next borrower after one week. Full details
of the scheme are available at www.tartarugarecords.com
Tartaruga Records is a small independent record label, focused on
releasing high-quality music from original and forward-thinking
artists. A huge level of attention is paid to the presentation and
packaging of each release, as we firmly believe in the continuing
relevance of the physical artefact. This is the second release on
Tartaruga, following on from the debut album by Bleeding Heart
Narrative which was released in March 2008.
