Seed Records are back and they've cobbled together a smashing comp of tunes to announce their return to the musical foray. It's always tricky reviewing comps as we tend to not have the time to review 'em track by track so we just list a bunch of artists and say if it's any cop or not. Which is kind of what I'm gonna do here. Featuring artists like Zombi, Mokira, Sleeps In Oysters (the next Seed release), Legowelt, Alexander Robotnick, Tobias Schmidt, dDamage, Neil Landstrumm, The Doubtful Guest and lots more. The opening track by Zombi rules..... classic Zombi, quality cinematic synth gear. The whole comp is an interesting one traversing different styles of electronic music from electro to electronica to experimental to Gameboy gear to techno to acid etc. It jumps all over the place yet it all fits together like a Michael Jackson and his one glove. I especially like the Mokira track which I reckon you Raster Noton folks would lap up. Hand numbered of 500 copies. Well tasty!2008 and a whole new vision and direction for the infamous, ‘Seed Records,’ bringing onboard artists who’ve previously released on Tresor, Mille Plateaux, Planet Mu, Bunker Records, Relapse and Sire, and giving them a fresh home to go nuts in!
The long awaited follow up to 2003’s breathtaking Seed Records Volume 1 takes the current template for composition in the 21st century and bends and blends it into something well beyond the future.
Pitching regular Seed stalwarts against an entirely new roster angle, (or should that be angel?) this limited edition, startling and oft audacious 15 track sampler of aural dynamite sets out to champion the best in techno, noise, folk, punk, dub and electronics that the globe has got to offer and in so doing -hopefully - illustrates a veritable map of such instrumental and mechanised finery that it is unparalleled in today’s musical environment.
Silhouetted against a multi-coloured moon and etched in to a flaming sky, those masters of the macabre, Zombi, begin our quest with their inimitable yet classic sounds to accompany many a bleeding chick by a riverbank.
Ice cool and without equal Andreas Tilliander then takes charge, leading the naked on a dessert voyage of enlightenment with his shape-shifting dubbed out drones par excellence whilst behind the shattered cerulean dunes a territory of benign splendor beckons; inhabited solely by the delicate nuances of Legowelt and Sleeps In Oysters.
Our next port of call lies beyond the mottled mirror with the dazzle-punk of EYES and Skitanja poised and ready to liquidise your skull before a clean blast of Italo, composed by the legendary Alexander Robotnick and DJ Antoni Maiovvi return you to a time of halcyon eves teeming with neon lit sleaze holes and mind altering juices. Then, just when you think it’s safe to take to the street once again you’re…
Blind-folded and hurtled head long into a technoid assault spearheaded by no less a trio than TobiasSchmidt, Mark Verbos and Neil Landstrumm, each of them holed up in their own crumbling dystopian milieu of busted automatons and glider wrecks.
And that folks…that, is only part of the rollercoaster ride that is Seed Records Volume 2!
