What we say

Rating: happy This record left our Brian feeling happy.

Bloody hell, I did love that Black Kids single about yr boyfriend having 2 left legs but trying to suss where the hell they're coming from over the course of an album is just silly. It's like The Killers partying with Betty Boo at an ABC concert and is stacked with shiny FM radio gems. Gems so polished in fact that the gleam from them is rendering @#$#**$$$ me unable to type properly. Yah this is uber-smooth 80's flecked proper pop muzak with a charmingly naive indie twist made by youngsters for youngsters. I keep on having images of septuagenarians hobbling happily along in garish shell suits walking those small yappy type dogs, wearing hideous sunglasses & roller parks full of cheerleaders drinking iced cherry coke. That's to say the quality of songwriting is fresh & shiny & pretty carefree and I can see them exploding rather large time with 'Partie Traumatic'.

What the label says:

Black Kids are pleased to announce details of their eagerly awaited debut album ‘Partie Traumatic’.

Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida they comprise of brother and sister Reggie and Ali Youngblood, Dawn Watley, Owen Holmes and Kevin Snow.

After enjoying a wave of interest via their MySpace last summer, they began working with Quest Management (Bjork, Arcade Fire) in September 2007 and signed to Almost Gold Recordings in November.

This deal coincided with the band offering up their ‘Wizard of Ahhhs’ EP as a free download via a dedicated website –www.blackkidsmusic.com. This EP consisted of the bands’ demo recordings of ‘Hit The Heartbrakes’, ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance with You’, ‘Hurricane Jane’ and ‘I’ve Underestimated My Charm (Again)’.

2008 has so far seen the band included in the BBC Sounds Poll for 2008 and tipped as Ones To Watch by the NME (amongst others). They have enjoyed continued touring including headlining a Vice Tour with Ipso Facto and Friendly Fires, support tours with Kate Nash and Sons & Daughters, and sold out shows at London’s Water Rats and two ICA headline dates – all before releasing a single.

After a storming show at this year’s Coachella festival, Black Kids have recently toured America with Cut Copy and returned to the UK at start of June for a full headline tour – a completely sold out headline tour – which showcases their exciting talents.

Produced by Bernard Butler at West Heath studios, London over five weeks this spring – debut album ‘Partie Traumatic’ - comprises of ten exquisitely refreshing pop songs including their debut hit single ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ (#11 in the UK charts) and forthcoming sure-to-be-a-smash new single, ‘Hurricane Jane’. Other highlights include the recently penned ‘I'm Making Eyes At You’ and album closer ‘Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)’.

About the humble LP:

The LP is the daddy of formats. 12" inches of sheer joy. The LP adds to the glory of the 12" record as it can be played at a slower speed (33rpm instead of the usual 45rpm for singles), consequently more musical joy can be had. Played on a decent deck the sound of an LP is about a million times better than any other format. They look fantastic...... a nice gatefold sleeve with a information rich inner sleeve will keep you entertained for hours even before your stylus has chance to make eye contact with it's 12" prey. An essential part of musical heritage which will never be forgotten. It still does play at a multitude of speeds but as it's recorded to be played slower they normally sound ridiculous sped up. Though double albums can make up for this slight inadequacy by ramming more tunes into your ears for your money. Utterly essential.
