OVERVIEW: As impeccably timed for the Summer months a track named 'Holiday' may seem, Metronomy's take on 'the getaway' sure ain't as frivolous or as seasonally upbeat as you'd expect. It's not going to entreat the masses stationed in Magaluf in Peak Season to joyfully leap onto tables, nor will it inspire Macarena-style dance routines (though the band do try to fashion something similar in the 'Holiday' video). No. At its core, 'Holiday' is a shadowy, spooked disco. Flecks of 'Blue Monday' mix with a little of Bronski Beat's 'Small Town Boy' to carve out a dark, measured, disco pop anthem, haunted by Girl Trouble. Lyrically, it may be a humorous spotlight on fairly commonplace relationship-induced tensions, but sonically, 'Holiday' flies the flag for the darker, disenchanted elements of Metronomy's new long player. Harbouring a fine collection of perfectly constructed, freakishly danceable tracks, 'Nights Out' could already be passionately proclaimed (so here I am proclaiming), a future electro-pop classic. It's a record of real experiment, intelligence, risk, and individuality, the likes of which have not been celebrated since Hot Chip first came to the fore. It's subversive, multi-coloured art-pop void of both frivolity and pretension. Metronomy are wholly deserving of every bit of praise they will surely garner in the coming months.
