Yet another wee 7" from The State Broadcasters called 'Let's Make T-Shirts' a charming indie pop tune about being young and falling in love. I especially like the lyric "You showed me your appendix scars" and then it goes "and I showed you my red, red,red.... face" I was so disappointed. I thought he was going to say "end". Not my bag this but I must say it's all very cute and sweet and endearing. In fact it's not unlike former label mates Belle and Sebastian..."Let's make T-shirts, My Dad's got a T-shirt making machine" Ah bless 'em.
The State Broadcasters began as a song writing project in 2004 when songwriter Graeme Black met multi-instrumentalists Pete MacDonald. After some low key live performances the duo realised they enjoyed performing the songs themselves and began to piece together a full band. In the last year The State Broadcasters have developed into a formidable live band producing an original and eclectic brand of Americana folk pop.
They have now gathered a settled core band featuring Graeme on acoustic guitar and vocals, Pete on piano, trombone, guitar, harmonica and vocals, Gillian Fleetwood on clarsach, glock and vocals and Fergus MacDonald on banjo, acoustic and electric guitars.
2006 began with The Broadcasters winning a Danny Kyle new band award at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival and the 4 piece have gone on throughout the year to build a reputation as one of the best live bands in Glasgow. They have supported a variety of touring Americana acts including The Handsome Family, Common Rotation and Damien Jurado.
April 2006 saw the launch of the first recorded output by The State Broadcasters. They had 2 songs on the debut Wendy House collective compilation album ’Welcome’. They were also invited to contribute a song to German label Aufgeladen Und Beiret’s album of Scottish music ’Get While The Getting’s Good’.
