OVERVIEW: Pitchfork best New Music - 8.5 "one of the most welcoming (and welcome) records of 2008 so far" Alternative Press 4/5 "Pretty awesome, seriously" Myspace.com - Featured Artist Of The Week (TWICE) NY Times - Pick Of SXSW NME - # 3 in top 10 bands of SXSW
Visiter
is the debut album by San Francisco psychedelic folk pop duo, The
Dodos. Swiftly picked up by Wichita recordings after an exhilarating
string of SXSW dates, the band will arrive in the UK this May. Les
Savy Fav arrived in February raving about this two piece and saying
they might be the best band that had ever supported them, indeed, the
live show is reputed for being utterly encapsulating..
Their
debut single Red and Purple (out June 30th) shows their subtle folk pop
dexterity, awash with complex and urgent rhythms no doubt gathered from
lead singer Meric’s studies in West African Ewe drumming. Second
single ‘Fools’ (out this September) is a gem of a record, all stand out
melody and wistful vocals. The Dodos’ signature elements of primitive
percussion and a low current of tribal drums are at their psychedelic
best in tracks such as Paint The Rust and Ashley - making Visiter a
pioneering debut.
Originally formed in 2006 under the moniker Dodobird as a one man acoustic act, Meric Long would gig around San Francisco playing folky guitar with a combination of loops an ambient
keyboards. After exploring percussion and drumming, Meric got turned
onto country blues and sought to create a band where the drumming could
be a centre role and help bring out the syncopated rhythms coming out
of the acoustic guitar. Meric met Logan Kroeber, who had also been
experimenting with drumming, but in the area of progressive metal.
Eventually the band changed their name to The Dodos. The album ‘Visiter’ (Frenchkiss in USA) is due out this July on Wichita. |
