This is the first I've heard of any of the Blood Brothers since their sad split and it's the one who sounds like he's got a permanent bollock-clamp on who's crawled out of the ashes to serve up a nice little limited 7" of light, poppy spaz on Matador under the name Jaguar Love. The A-side 'Highways of Gold' is a jaunty little number that bounces around very pleasantly, the same could be said of the reverse but it also sounds quite touching, maybe because he actually seems to complete his transformation into a cartoon baby squirrel on it, the fulfillment of what I'd have to assume is a lifelong dream.. It's a wonderful thing to witness.Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, alternative supergroup JAGUAR LOVE formed from members of two disbanded greats: ex Blood Brothers guitarist Cody Votolato and singer Johnny Whitney, alongside Jay Clark from Pretty Girls Make Graves (once guitarist and now drummer, multi-instrumentalist
and producer).
However, the story this time is very different. After relocating to Portland (from Seattle), these once hardcore musicians have honed their ferociously creative and complex song structures into something strikingly melodic. Votolatos crazed Japanese electric 12-string guitar parts remain as intricate
and Beefheart-esque as ever, but Whitney has turned his screaming vocals into pure Bolan-esque glam. The result: an alternative pop music - powerful, edgy and totally unique.
Although JAGUAR LOVE EP is the bands first release they have, to date, nearly 40,000 MySpace friends and growing fast. Testament to their energetic and impassioned live performance as seen on the site and - for those lucky enough to have been there – their recent West Coast dates as special guests on the Queens of the Stone Age tour.
Having just completed their debut album, JAGUAR LOVE bring you the mother of all tasters. The JAGUAR LOVE EP (out now on Matador Records) includes two album tracks ‘Highways of Gold’ and ‘My Organ Sounds Like…’
