Ol' Dave Lazonby (ex of the remarkable Lazerboy amongst others) is one of the most endearing & quirky people i've ever met on the Leeds scene. His band Geese have collaborated with Damo Suzuki from Can on some serious improv freeform projects in recent years & now shout out with their debut 7" 'The Plane's Gone Dad', a white vinyl treat in two parts. It's got that shimmering, sky gazing feel, a sweet wistfulness like Spiritualized if they drank scrumpy & watched WW2 documentaries rather than talking to god through a heroin haze. They call it an apocalyptic torch song and they're not wrong, this one's got some serious sad eyed space rock tentacles but bags of heart & soul. Part 2 fizzles out into organic cyber bleeps & crackly field recordings posing a big ? as to what to expect next from this curious collective. Dave wants you, the consumer, to hear his music so is therefore offering up this highly limited (200) disc for the price of a meager cheeseburger (music CAN be food and affordable to boot, I feel is his philosophy!) so avoid those tacky franchises & save yr lucky gold coin for this bittersweet slice of heartfelt eccentric genius. This would be my SOTW no. 2, no messin'The Plane's Gone Dad.7" white vinyl single on Vanity Case.Ltd edition of 500 individually numbered
Inexplicably, there are very few apocalyptic torch ballads around at the moment...:here is one.
the first non-cdr release by Geese,to be followed up later this year by a full length cd release on u.s. label Mind Expansion and a second Vanity Case single.
Geese have three full length albums and a 41 minute mind melting ep lined up for release. There are plans to additionally release these albums on Vanity Case on vinyl,to accompany the cd releases.
Geese are David Lazonby and Graham Bailey.
David Lazonby started out in music as a jazz saxophonist. He made one album in this field, called;"War All the Time" on the Slam label.
Between 1995 and 2000,David masterminded the psychedelic pop group,"Lazer Boy",also confusingley known as "Lazerboy" .David joined up with Steve Goodwin, the drummer from "Cud",Chris Trout,of "AC Temple","Kilgore Trout" and "Spoonfed Hybrid",Mickey Dale, who should have been in The Motheras of invention and Kim Birtwell, chanteuse and stary keyboards.
They made four albums, three of which were released:"Forget Nothing";Freek Records(UK);,"Fallen World";Probe Plus (UK),and "The man on the street where he lives";,Music Mine(Japan).there were also various singles, including a split 10" ep with "Quigley":"Spring will be a little late this year";,Vespertine(UK)
Around this time David played casiotone in the least popular band in Leeds, the fabulous "Coping Saw",with legendary musicologist,Karren Ablaze! They made one album:"Outside Now";,House of Dubois(UK),Paroxysm(US).As the last millenium fizzled out David was surrounded by keyboards in the "live" incarnation of "Triumph 2000",with Richard Formby and Howard Storey.
In 2001 David and Steve Goodwin recorded an album under the name of "Geese".A mainly instumental album:"We Be Geese".It received some airplay on programmes such as BBC Radio 3's Mixing It,but was never released.
At this time,Steve was working with visual/conceptual artist,Graham Bailey,on some soundscapes for a surreal theatre company.
over the next couple of years David and Graham gradually started making music together.
David and Graham recorded many hours of music, collated on the near mythical self released:"hooked up to a bag...with Geese",a 6 x 3" cd glued to 12" vinyl set in a limited edition of twenty-three.
There have been continued collaborations and contributions from Steve, guitarist Felix Frey, the far out vocal stylings of Howard Storey,ex of "Triumph 2000"(his is the beautiful vocal on "Disclaimer:") and Kim Birtwell is featured singing Fern Kinney's "together we are beautiful",with full brass band accompaniment.
