Old 4AD/Static Caravan chapster Magnetophone has popped his head up as a guest on new limited CD label First Fold. Trying to recall what his earlier stuff sounded like but 'Wires & Tapes' begins with an absorbing space ballad that sounds like Animal Collective having to say farewell to each other forever, all these twinkles & gorgeous effects surrounding you whilst punctured vocals intoned in a monotone fashion. It finishes in quite an an unsettling way, like a frightened music box being abducted by aliens. His production is quite remarkable, On track 2 you get very beautiful cyber ambience with disembodied vocals that sound like Panda Bear battling with a Massive Attack bassline, Track 3 is abstract piano & electronic morphing/glitch with a side dish of clouded vox and the closer is yet more cosmic Animal Collective inspired drift with some smashing hypnotic prog keys & spacious enveloping glory! Great stuff! This mini album is an EDN of 100 so be bloody quick-smart like!About Magnetophone Magnetophone are Birmingham natives Matt Huish Saunders and John Hanson. Friends since childhood, as boys they would often be found under water, weighed down by bricks and playing Stylophones. Displaying a gift for linguistic manipulation which has continued to sustain their career, they named this ritual the "Alpha Beti Bon-Tempi Underwater Electro-Hydro Sound-Fusion" About Wires and Traps EP Magnetophone bring their unique vision of electronic music to First Fold with this carefully structured EP, each track features a different acoustic instrument as a musical base, created as melancholic Steve Reich inspired arpeggios, the songs then build up with ever changing vocal phases, swirling synthetic sounds and expanding melodies, that culminate into the finely crafted electronica we have come to expect from Magnetophone.
