What we say

Rating: unmoved This record left our Ant feeling unmoved.

Right then lets see if the Black Kids 'Hurricane Jane' single is anything like the last one which was kinda Robert Smith fronting Pulp sort of thing. Man we sold a hella load of that single.... Cripes this is some ultra smooth stuff which reminds me of ABC. In fact its so bloody smooth it's like Like Dr smooth drinking smoothies listening to 'Smooth Criminal'. It makes me think of the last dance at an indie disco where the lads that haven't pulled slink over to some girlies doing a smooth dance. Two smooth coloured vinyl 7"s and CD single on Almost Gold... Smooth peanut butter is for little chicken sissy babies BTW.

What the label says:

You already know how it goes - with one of the most recognisable guitar intros of recent times - Black Kids are set to release their sultry future smash single ’Hurricane Jane’ on June 23.

Having been available as a demo since last summer, this song is one of the main reasons Black Kids found themselves caught up in the hype whirlwind – this newly recorded version further proves they are definitely substance over style.

BK are by no means all about this track, their debut single. ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ entered the UK Charts at #11. Their debut album, ‘Partie Traumatic’ is choc-full of equally effervescent pop songs just waiting to be heard.

The understated, sexy intro and swaggering verse builds into the girl/boy vocals exchanging –

“You can’t spend the night”,
“Yes, I’m sure you’re right”

and continues into the euphoric chorus of -

“It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody.?
Oh, what's the use of making a bed?
?I took something and it feels like karate;?
It's kicked me down and left me for dead.?
It's Friday night and I ain't got nobody,?
So what's the use of pulling a shape??
I put what I want, when I want, in my body.?
I'm never gonna give what I take.”

Judging by their live shows the song is an indie disco anthem in the making. A dash of disco, a dash or two of heartbreak and a rousing chorus, what else do you need?

About the humble CD single:

Another digital format and even though they can hold 80 minutes of information (like a CD album would) record companies only fill up a small portion of the disc. Sometimes only 1 or 2 tracks on there totalling 5 minutes or so. It's like going to a restaurant and getting a plate of food with 2 green beans on and wondering where the rest of your meal is. Sometimes they're lovingly packaged though and when the music is good then you're into a winner. Also you get videos on there sometimes which you can watch on your computer. That is excellent.
