These are difficult times for the music industry. CD sales have plummeted as people swap files, illegally download and burn copies for friends. The traditional music business model is failing and record labels are scrabbling to find a way forward. Many are in panic, losing money hand over fist, merging with other companies in the wider “entertainment industry” in the hope of survival, or simply closing their doors altogether. The artists pay for the manufacture and promotion of their own records and correspondingly they receive 100% of any income generated by those releases. There is no middleman. There are no management pockets to line, no shareholders to please, no restrictive contracts or demands placed on the artists.
