What we say about Datassette, by Datassette
This record left our Mingus Who? feeling happy.
Datassette: S/T (Ai) Nine track LP that starts out all electro with wheezes, spurts of air and a hint of a melody fighting to break out of the electric maze. One can't fault Ai for their continued championing of all things electronica, most of their releases come cutely packaged and with the addition of Datassette makes it a label keeping an eye on. Moving through side A. we get brief forays into Eighties pop, broken 8bit modules, some more breakdancing tunes and a percussive Bola-esque outro. On the flip Datassette cuts some impressive takes on mid-ninties Bleep, Basic Channel stlye Dub techno and some low end dancefloor fare. All in all, quite an eclectic set that seems to flow between the styles quite effortlessly.
What the label says about Datassette, by Datassette:
Seemingly not wanting to be pigeonholed into any one genre, Datassette’s first full-length album is an action-packed journey through many different styles and moods that maintains a satisfying quirky inventiveness throughout.
Opening with ’Vapour Trails’ the listener is bathed in layers of machine-made sonic textures contrasted against super heavy bass stabs, sharp dubstep-tinged rhythms and playful synth passages that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Metro Area release. The initial slow-paced opener then migrates into electro territory as the listener is treated to a dose of ’Worms’ - a sparsely populated rhythmbox landscape which is gradually infested by an array of peculiar sounds wriggling their way into view.
On the home stretch the pace slows down a notch with Datassette’s take on minimal; ’Damage Report’ goes deep and dishes up a helping of contemplative rhythmical chord progressions, percussive pops, clicks and 8-bit bass stabs.
Finally, ’Melting Faces’ brings proceedings to a close with and an electro lullaby that provides a luscious ending to this refreshingly rich album.
