After Clint's savaging of their last single I feel I should give The Cure a bit of a hand up after they've fallen foul of their dicky zimmer frame. 'Freakshow' is probably the perkiest number I've heard them do with indecipherable slurred wonky lyrics and lots of wah wah guitar. I just can't get upset, even though this is obviously the sound of an old man wanking happily over his money. The thing is, the last thing i'd expect is a misery fest after all these years! There's an indulgent joy to the new material with tons of questionable guitar squalling and funky drums. They sound wildly celebratory which after 30 years in the business is just plain honest. So, I think there's still room for these men out there after they've carved such a unique niche in contemporary music but i'd love to see Clint's face after hearing this single and it's equally pointless B-side. I think he'd look like a man chewing live wasps......Ltd 7" and CDs.
