...according to our Phil on 17 April 2008.
Nowhere is the knack for screwing with expectations
more obvious than with RepoMen's current EP, Star.
Y'see, what those crafty Sheffielders have done is to
seduce the listener into following a path apparently
strewn with summery guitar pop and Boo Radleys-esque
choruses just like it's the mid-90s all over again. Go
beyond the saccharine indie blueprint of title track, 'Star',
however, and the picture begins to darken. With 'Violet',
all guitar pop leanings are abandoned in favour of the
wistful dirty glamour afforded by this largely piano and
double bass driven lament, all rounded off with a music
box solo that offers a massive (but no less welcome) nod
towards the plaintive melancholy of The Smiths', 'Asleep'.
It's an inspired touch and one that plunges the listener
straight into the atmospheric drama of piano-led instrumental
track, 'Diminished'. Not so much gloom-laden as
beautiful in its disconsolation, it's a neat little composition
harbouring epic aspirations whilst mercifully shunning
the temptation to overdo the grandeur. Closing with the
most soporific of climaxes, it's impossible to deny the lullaby
effect of final track, 'Both Feet', from the a capella
opening and folk-style acoustic strummings right through
to the piano meandering the record to its close. In deviating
from the guitar-pop pattern promised by Star's title
track, RepoMen have accomplished a rare feat in overthrowing
the indie mandate to create a thing of dark and
twisted beauty.
