What their label says...
For Fans Of: The Zombies, Daniel Johnston, The Silver Jews. Welcome to the world of New Haven Connecticut’s, The Mountain Movers. One day, not so recently, they emerged with 24 love songs with broken images of the devil, death, and the afterworld. For their debut, they whittled it down to 12 tracks of narcotic rock. There are moments of hope and celebration, but ultimately the devil, who here stands for everything from distraction to excess, always wins. The songs are written and sung by Daniel Greene of the critically acclaimed band The Butterflies of Love. He is an elementary school teacher of all subjects, a Divinity School graduate, and an author and illustrator of books of poems, strange children’s stories, and one act plays. Dan’s paintings of nuns and monks fixing electrical equipment, which he draws obsessively and which cover the walls of his house, decorate the album’s sleeve. Live, the boys stumble through a dynamic set of songs with laid-back abandon. Rick Omonte (bass), Rob Katz (piano), John Panos (trumpet), Eric Elligers (saxophone), and Jay Bates (drums) lead the band through a gripping set of songs. Dan sings with soul and gusto. Like listening to the oldies station, the songs are classic in structure and moving in spirit. The stage becomes a small space, where those songs built up in the shed can be let loose on the public. This record represents a beginning for the band. They are already at work recording a long list of songs for a follow-up. The songs go from the head to the shed to the studio to your home, where we hope they will find a warm welcome. Guests on the record include: Mark Mulcahy (bvox) and Mr Ray from Miracle Legion, Spacey Casey Prestwood (pedal steel) and Jay Russell (bvox) from Hot Rod Circuit, Scott Amore (organs, synths, engineering) from The Butterflies Of Love, Pete Wasilewski (sax) from Less Than Jake, and Chris Rhodes (trombone) from Bosstones and The Toasters. Richie D'Ablis from Secret Ink played drums. Press to run in : Uncut, Rocksound, Plan b, Clash, Stool Pigeon, Is This Music?, Tasty, The Cuckoo Press, Bloom (Germany) and more still tbc.
