Buck 65:'Situation' (Warners) Second sortie on a major label for one of the more appealing Anti-Con associated left field HipHop providers. Everyone I converse with regarding all things left of centre HipHop, tend to agree that although some of his recorded material is strong, it's his live shows that are way more entertaining. Despite his boho/Tom Waits fixations (which are fine by me) his delivery of tongue twisting rhymes and vocal acrobatics are a welcome break from the usual whining, nasaly delivery associated with many from this so-called alternative HipHop scene. Themed around aspects of counter cultural movements (the artwork is ace), the title no doubt refers to the Situationists and the year Teen rebellion was invented. There's no heavy tretise, just a list like reference to rebels, outlaws, habits, consumerism, the law etc backed by solid beats, some tight scratches and fills. As opposed to other Anti-Con accolytes the music refers more directly to HipHop in it's purest form, sans the bragging and boasting. If I had enough time to digest it, I'd probably enjoy it a lot more. In this instance, it's relatively entertaining although I'd prefer to hear a live rendition. As anyone who's had the opportunity will testify, live is where he really comes into his own. Recommended.

OVERVIEW: Buck 65 returns on October 29th with his new studio album 'Situation' which is loosely based on the year 1957. The album sees a return to the style that brought him success in 2003 with 'Talkin Honky Blues'. 'Situation' contains memorable melodies, beats that make your rib cage shake and intelligent insightful lyrics. The events of the year 1957 created a legacy that affects the way we live and think 50 years later. For all intents and purposes, 1957 marked the beginning of youth rebellion culture. Most importantly, this was the year rock 'n roll broke into the mainstream and into public consciousness. Rock 'n' roll existed before this of course, but in '57 artists like Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent (read: white guys) had their first big hits. Rock 'n' roll began to take over the airwaves and popular music charts from the crooners like Perry Como, Pat Boone and Dean Martin. This was the year that the film (and song) Jailhouse Rock by Elvis was released, and it caused a sensation. Although we're never likely to see a cultural revolution on the scale of 1957 again, we've been conditioned to expect it. The idea of one person – or a group – having ideas so new, so radical, so dangerous that they will change the world forever, is very exciting to us. We've been conditioned to anticipate 1957 happening all over again. Exactly 50 years later it's interesting to examine this idea and to question how far we've come, and how much has stayed the same.
