What their label says...
‘Read & Burn 03’ is the first Wire release featuring entirely new material since 2003’s hugely-acclaimed ‘Send’ album. Along with the re-launch of the band’s website pinkflag.com, its release is intended to signal the stage by stage re-activation of Wire as a recording and live entity. Read & Burn is the R&D series representing the state of Wire’s art right now. Their creative process continues to evolve and offered here are the fresh fruits of its latest development. Less angular and startlingly explosive than the output of the ‘Send’ period, the four tracks that comprise this EP show the band in 2007 heading in a comparatively more melodic direction, yet still decicated to their uniquely inventive and uncompromised approach. The spikes may have been retooled and the rough surfaces worked into a more polished surface, but abrupt spikes they remain. Opening with the epic 10-minute looping tension-and-release motorik of ‘23 Years Too Late’, ‘Read & Burn 03’ is further evidence of the familiarly unexpected sonic philosophy which has continued to enthral a devoted fanbase throughout Wire’s 30 year history. Neither ’23 Years Too Late’ nor the three other new songs that make up this EP’s 25 minute running time will appear on Wire’s forthcoming new album, due for release in early 2008.
