ESG: "A South Bronx Story" (Soul Jazz) Is billed as collectors edition complete with rarities. These rarities are odds and ends of outtakes from some of their better known tunes "Moody" and "You're No Good". Coming to prominence largely due to early B-Boys/Girls adopting the break from "Liquid Liquid" to throw some shapes and bust a move at throwdown battles or block parties, these stripped down grooves and jams have an infectious, feel good factor. It's agreed in the Tower office that they come across best when everything's kept to a minimum, without the frills of extended guitars solos. I particularly like the use of percussion, handclaps, chanted vocals and stop-start beats. Amongst the pioneers of the so-called Punk-Funk sound, this all girl NYC group, paved the way for the likes of A Certain Ratio, Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club to name just a few. Soul Jazz are definetly on the money with their reissues, reigniting interests and rejuvenating careers.
