Single of the week- iLIKETRAINS- Spencer Perceval (CDs and 10" on
Beggars Banquet) iLIKETRAINS are a great great band. It took me a while to pick up on this
fact as the 1st few singles passed me by when they were released. The singles
comp thing they did drew me into their catalogue-o-joy and now I'm well and truly
hooked now like a filthy crack whore. Spencer Perceval is out now on CD and 10" on Beggars
Banquet.
After a quick 'who the feck is Spencer Perceval search' on the internet I can
now tell you it's some dude from the 1700-1800's who was only British prime
minister to be assassinated. Musically this is 100% complete misery on a stick
with lashings of Godspeed guitars and post rock histrionics. The vocals are well
doomy and gloomy and the whole thing is generally quite oppressive. Yet
bizarrely at the same time it's also uplifting and rather moving. How wierd is
that. Think of them as the British Godspeed with Michael Gira esque deep misery
vocals and you'll have a great idea of what this sounds like. Those ingredients
are well up my (back) alley so that's why this sucker is coming a-home with me.
Woohoo!! Fantastische.

What their label says...
‘Spencer Perceval’ is a colossal and beautiful piece of music, setting out the stall for this strangely unique band in the year to come. The Leeds five piece arrived in 2006 with their powerful tales of morose events from bygone days, murder and misfortune. The stories told by iLiKETRAiNS are set to carefully structured, adorning melodies with instrumental patterns capable of creating an incredible range of emotions. Historical misadventure, death and the subtle paths that lead to it and which are created by it, are subject matters they have made their own. Their spine tingling songs have no intention to compete with pop’s ambitions and have hence won them glowing press reviews and a dedicated following from across the continent.
