BARBAROSSA provide us with 'Chemical Campfires', a multi layered & moving album of widescreen folk & brittle, inventive pop produced by Simon Lord of Garden/Simian fame. There's definitely a warm, bubbly soul throughout this album, as country/bluegrass textures rub shoulders with an electro-acoustic template of progressive folk/pop. Surely one for fans of Simian, King Creosote & Tunng, this is fresh, with wonderful vocal harmonies & feeling as it is in debt to the more traditional elements of acoustic pop. I can understand the popularity of Fence records if they're continuing to unveil well rounded releases such as this absorbing & emotive 10 track collection

Chemical Campfires is Barbarossa's first full-length effort - and it’s a very honest affair, showcasing his stunning vocal range and knack for melody. Ten songs that twist the verse-chorus-verse endgame into something wild, something electronic, something unexpected. Produced by Simon Lord (Simian, GARDEN), the album fuses together modern recording techniques with acoustic instrumentation. James’ voice surrounds and rebounds throughout, whilst echoes, samples and electronic beats murmur and bubble within.

The immediacy of the songs result in an album that is ostensibly, and unashamedly, pop, and yet remains a listening experience that rewards repeated plays. As the listener familiarises with the lyrics and melodies, the many textured layers begin to sprout, and bristle against the ear like a well-trimmed fiery ginger beard.
