KRISTIN HERSH is back with a new EP on 4AD. I loved Hips And Makers all those years ago. Now it sounds like she's treading water. I don't even need to mention Throwing Muses anymore which is a godsend. You all know who she is now.  The In Shock EP is nothing exciting though track 2 Windowpane is worth of a mention as it sounds like something off the marvelous Strings EP she did a while back. Mainstream Q/ Mojo reader's indie music these days.... She sounds like she's been smoking loads of fags though cos her voice scrapes across each song rather dutifully. Think of Mark Lanegan after estrogen injections.

The first single to be lifted from Kristin Hersh’s dazzling new album, ‘Learn To Sing Like A Star’.     The former Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave frontwoman presents her best work yet with ‘In Shock’ – an EP backed with three additional tracks that will not appear on the album.Twenty years and fifteen albums into her career, the dazzling disarray of Hersh’s early work has given way to a more matured accomplishment.  Her voice has grown deeper and richer and the songs now take flight without leaving artist and listener seasick.  The gift that once overwhelmed Hersh in her early years has been harnessed — with craft, with age — to magnificent effect.    ‘In Shock’ is a bold, spacious, sumptuous record with emphatic energy and fervour - “when you’re head over heels in shock” cries Hersh on the title track, producing an endlessly believable passion in her voice than ever before.
