I've just heard a funny Cat Power story that I can't
repeat I'm afraid. So instead I'll have to tell you all about her new album
which is entitled 'The Greatest'. It starts in fine fashion with last
weeks wonderful Lambchop like single 'The Greatest' but as the album
wears on it seems to become more indistinct and middle of the road. The
instrumentation is all quite tasteful and there's no risks to be taken. It could
be a taste thing as I really don't like albums like Bonnie Prince Billy's
'Ease Down the Road' (preferring his more stripped down sound) and that's what
this album sounds like to me. A singer with a lovely voice and some nice songs
but with a bit too much honey and gloop served on top. The songs are constantly
threatening to disappear into a pony tailed session musician hell hole. Still,
its not a bad album and will appeal to fans of gentle, unthreatening alt country
as well as the odd stray Dido fan. On Matador.
