Ooooh wibble, gurgle, gush, fawn....faint. BANG!!! There. I've crashed again. It's all the fault of upstart Scots post punkers JOSEF K. Or Domino spending all the profit they've made off lesser "disposable" bands on lavish re-issues of old music that begs, deserves nee DEMANDS to be heard again. 'Entomology' is a nifty little book package bragging a track listing no fan of this band could anguish over.
I said to Phil yesterday that there's hardly any bands from the new wave era that have fully influenced two completely separate generations of guitar pop. That's yer mid eighties C86 movement & the Franz led angular pop revival of the past couple of years. Spiky, edgy, frantic, deliriously off-kilter guitar pop. Think of early Wedding Present, Close Lobsters, That Petrol Emotion & Brilliant Corners (if yr an old saddo like me - hahaha!). NONE of these bands would have had the sound they thrilled audiences with without this revered 4 piece. I'm not much of a white soul boy so, sadly, Orange Juice were (largely)  lost on me. But the 22 tracks contained herein are mostly perfect slices of intense, angular art rock.
All those great singles are here, shiny & bright buzzsaw anthems that gleam with twinkling energy, the guitars duelling & firing off at obtuse angles, sending shivers all over. The band trashed their debut album for being "too polished" The 6 tracks from that session, however, more than stand the test of time. To think they're a quarter of a century old boggles the mind. If you care about indie (I know, I said this about the Artery comp....) then you proper need this utterly fantastic retrospective in your hands NOW. The sound of then. The sound of now!
