Never thought for a minute I'd one day be reviewing the debut album by
JARVIS COCKER. Well, as I kinda expected he's doing the middle aged thing
& writing slow, mature Britpop with country touches, & atmospheric piano
laden ballads. A kinda Richard Hawley easy crooner vibe in parts. All
very Mojo reader paced but there's summat about Jarvis that's just so
adorably crap, you totally overlook the fact this is music piped into the
toilets at the Slug & Lettuce. Now, Pulp got overexposed in my mind.
They had a surreal magic that went awry when they remained in the public eye too
long & whilst Cocker's lyrics are still occasionally fantastic (see 'Fat
Children') this is probably like a weak John Lennon album to a Beatles
fan. However, if you love the man, then give him some cash cause he needs a new
wardrobe the lanky retro tramp. G/fold LP (which has now sold out.. Sorry- Phil
xx)/CD (look for the Nick Drake
syndrome pics)
