I've been itching to hear the new JAMES PLOTKIN CD and lo and behold its at the top of my review pile. Sometimes it rules being me. This is Plotkin's first solo album in ten years. You may be aware of his work as Phantomsmasher or his Khanate project with Stephen O'Malley along with Alan Dubin who incidentally was in a previous band with him called OLD. Plotkin is one of those musicians along with Justin Broadrick who cut his teeth in the old death metal/Earache scene but has evolved as a musician experimenting with the very limits of sonic art. 'Kurtlanmak / Damascus' is two tracks that clock in at just under 52 minutes. Dark ambient, droney soundscapes and guitar manipulated with laptop and drenched in electronics performed live both in New York and Buenos Aires. Limited to 1000 copies in a deluxe sleeve with obi strip on Utech Records. Highly recommended.
