Magical CD from Australia's best kept secret MINIMUM CHIPS. Been hammering
'Lady Grey' here as Phil & I are both big Broadcast & Stereolab fans
& this unruly bunch have been quietly evolving into the antipodean answer to
those 2, albeit with their own earthy take on affairs. For example
'Cold Afternoon' is a slow burning gem with breathy vocals, 'Black' is the
perfect amalgamation of t' cast & t'lab, all funky drums, dreamy swirling
keyboard & earthy guitars. Totally effortless & grooving. It's the
organic feel of the songs that wins me over. Eschewing Broadcast's pristine
studio perfection for a lighter & more down at heel production lends
these tunes a homelier edge. The lilting metronomic soul of the tracks is
beautifully juxtaposed with a classic pop edge. The songs just melt away inside
your head leaving you just really pleased to be alive. There's also strong hints
of Lali Puna in parts so if yr a fan of those 3 aforementioned bands, you'll be
overjoyed with this - it's better than 'Tender Buttons' in my humble opinion! If
Phil was here, this WOULD be album of the week (i thought it were gonna be, I
can tell yer) But it's just been pipped to the post. Second place never felt
& looked so good on this occasion!
