Hurrah a new Fall album. Apparently Mark E Smith is going to be
reading out the football scores on BBC1's Final Score sometime in November. I am
not joking - surely an event not to be missed. "Their finest album
yet" it says on the front. That's quite a claim. Straight away the minute
it starts up it sounds like nothing else ever. That's the great thing about The
Fall you just don't know what you are going to get. The production is
thankfully much more chunky this time round with lots of squelchy synths and
noisy guitars topped as ever by Mark E Smith's trademark growl. At times
his delivery is just downright bizzare and on 'Midnight in Aspen' he drawls over
a quite beautiful pastoral guitar piece. Pity though that "Blindness"
has been re-recorded from the Narnack sampler version which was downright
stunning. On first listen then a valiant effort. CD and limited vinyl on Slogan.
