Durutti Column have made some wonderful records over the years (as
well as one or two dodgy ones). There's a new one out on Kooky and features the
most hideous close up of the wizened features of Sir Vini Reilly on the
front. Anyone who has seen 24 Hour Party People will know the jokes about
Mr Reilly's singing voice. He sings a few here but there's also some of the
magnificent ethereal instrumentals for which he is known. This is a lovely
record - Vini Reilly should be knighted. He pretty much invented post
rock way back in 1979 and is still making records that at times are head and
shoulders above everything else around..... and he always thanks his
hairstylist on the album credits.
