What their label says...
Based in Utrecht, Holland, is mainly me (Esther Sprikkelman) with help from Steve Mitchell , Harry Otten and who ever passes by. When I have an idea for a song, I ask Harry and/or Steve to help me putting it in some sort of shape. Harry makes up nice guitarparts to replace my simple, awfully played ones and Steve is mostly the man for the finishing touch. Steve plays everything else, (apart from the harmonium which is played by me.)
As you know, Harry and I were in the Nightblooms. The band split up a couple of years ago. We were tired of touring, record companies, waiting for releases, lack of success and most of all: each other. It gets really claustrophobic always being with the same four people. Even though we all knew each other from school and had always been best friends, at the end of The Nightbloom-adventure we were on the verge of killing each other. We all became more and more impossible; we were behaving like idiots and stupid little children. All of this wasn't helped by the fact that we were all living in the same house as well.
But although it was a relieve not to be in a band anymore, after a while songs came back in my head. So I called Harry (still couldn't think of anybody else to play with) and we started all over again.
It was like the very beginning of the Nightblooms, rehearsing on a sunday-afternoon in our livingroom. (Safely at home.) And without the pressure of a band and the big bad world outside, it became fun again.
But what is a song without anybody who listens to it? That's why we decided now to record and release our stuff again. And personally I think it's nice to really finish a song by recording, packing and sleeving it. By making it a product.
In a biography there is always the need for musical reverences. I can tell you what music I like and who I get inspired by, but it will be mainly old classics that everybody names. I don't read music magazines anymore and I have no idea who's doing something like what we do at the moment. The only new bands I know and like are: Belle and Sebastian (how original) and a Dutch band called Bauer (who you probably don't know). Maybe it is better if you make the comparisons with contemporary artists? The music I mainly listen to is: Sandy Denny, Beach Boys, Beatles, Velvet Underground +Nico), Crosy Stills, Nash and Young, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac (Rumours) Carole King (Tapestry). Harry and Steve might want to name other favorites, but they are not here at the moment and I don't want to risk an argument by giving you the wrong information about there tastes.
