Jon Spencer releases his 40th LP this week on Mute and
it's name is Plastic Fang. The vinyl and ltd CD come in a special novelty
type package thing. I think it's supposed to emulate the crap jokes and
toys you'd get from joke shops when you were kid on holiday in Blackpool
(though I don't think they were exclusive to Blackpool and that sort of
packaging has been used outside of that particular northern seaside resort)
This I didn't like at first. But I banged it on this morn to give it another
go and I like it much more. Again it's very polished but the songs shine
through on repeated listens and it's not half bad at all. It's still blues
rock but there's a little more of the 70's Rolling Stones in there.
And a special mention to Mr Spencer's new sideys/ chops which are simply
stunning. Nice.
