'Roshara' is a stunning sounding CD from the ever-busy Reverb Worship. Not what I was expecting at all. A female vocalist & a bass player who build up their remarkable sound using looping & sampling techniques and some physical avant-garde techniques. The relatively brief opening track comes across like an ethereal choral piece. Almost like a drone madrigal, it is most intoxicating & very spectral. The remaining two pieces are quite lengthy (and even more engaging!) - this is where the pedals & effects are deployed in stunning fashion. For a start, some of the doom tinged atmospheres sound rather haunting but not too dense or overpowering. There's this dinky hypnotic cyclic picking sound running all the way through this second track, causing me to think of fellow countrywomen Nisennenmondai! Maybe if you could imagine such a thing as those three girls turning dark operatic ambient you'd be getting some idea of the vibe i'm getting from 'Seika' - it's an engrossing piece of music, almost Japanese chamber goth! It ends up with the second half descending into a monstrous cavern of churning downtuned noise which doesn't dampen the beauty of Fujiyuki's crystal voice. This particular segment recalls, in spirit, 'A Looming Resonance' by Wolves in the Throne Room, a most powerful piece of music. The climactic piece 'Naraka' is quite different. Voices glide & murmur over a rather wild, dystopian fog of shifting industrial hums, quiet grinding sounds (think getting a set of keys cut?) & intermittent subtle piercing frequencies, just before an awesome treated high-end bassline wanders into the arena & that voice returns to swoop over the resulting haunting melee. Haven't got time to see how it concludes though, i'll leave that for you dear listener! Possibly one of the most original things i've heard this year. Sarry are from Osaka & totally demand your time.
