I soon as I heard this record it evoked so many memories of bald fat men crying... No I wasn't reminiscing about a week of work here at Norman but I was casting my mind back to an event that occurs every 4 years..... An event that the English football fan looks forward to with a unhealthy mixture of hope and dread, an event that the Scottish football fans look forward to by picking which team to support that might beat England... The World Cup!!! The fricking World Cup!!! I doubt England will win the hallowed trophy but I know this song will be my personal soundtrack to the tournament. It's a million miles away from the usual World Cup song fare and galaxies away from the twattish "Vindaloo" lager lout style of football songs. It's assuredly melancholic, hauntingly sad yet strangely rousing... Perfect for drowning your sorrows after the predictable exit on penalties to Portugal. It really makes me replay all the great World Cup moments I have seen and it hits the back of the emotional net with a great piece of build up play from the strummed acoustic guitar and flair from both wings contributed by the lush string section. Great chorus too. He's a powerhouse, that chorus.. Great engine. It comes with limited postcards too.. Go Bafana Bafana!!!

Sound clips for Official World Cup Theme 2010 by The Declining Winter: on CD single at Norman Records UK. CD single, Home Assembly, HAM005CD, £3.09.
For fans of: Hood, Go-Betweens, New Order, The Durutti Column, Epic 45. The Declining Winter, brainchild of Richard Adams, co-founder of Hood (Domino Records), have gone old school – CD single-style – to delight the masses with their own inimitable ‘Official World Cup Theme 2010’. Previously described as “the sound of cassette tapes spilling out of the glove box of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England”, The Declining Winter up the ante with this stirring anthem bringing to mind New Order’s classic ‘World in Motion’ married with the melancholic pop of mid-period Go-Betweens. It’s perfect for drowning the sorrows after that quarterfinal exit on penalties. Produced by Choque Hosein (Brute Chorus, Lily Allen, Hood, Official World Cup Theme of Trinidad and Tobago 2006). The Declining Winter have released two albums, Haunt the Upper Hallways (2009, Home Assembly Music) and Goodbye Minnesota (2008, Rusted Rail) and a single, The Future Sound of Hip Hop parts 1 and 2 (2007, Misplaced Music).
