Icelandic producer and composer Valgeir Sigurdsson follows his Ekvilibrium album with another for Bedroom Community in the form of 'Draumalandid' and what a gentle and tender piece of work it is. Delicate melodies are interwoven with cinematic modern classical strings and piano. In many ways it feels like a soundtrack and there is a wonderful sense of tension that builds in several tracks. I can heartily recommend this for fans of the current wave of neo-classical stuff: Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Johan Johannsen etc. Some very beautiful and heart-wrenching moments on here as well as sounds that feel very magical. Visually I can really picture the icelandic landscapes as depicted on the sleeve. Lovely stuff.

What their label says...

* Draumalandid (“Dreamland”) is the latest release by renowned Icelandic producer and composer, Valgeir Sigurdsson who has previously worked with an impressive array of artist including Björk, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Coco Rosie, Mum and many more.

* It is the score to the critically acclaimed Icelandic documentary feature film Dreamland and features collaborations with Bedroom Community label mates Sam Amidon, Nico Muhly, Ben Frost and Daníel Bjarnason as well as musicians from the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and soloists Nadia Sirota and Borgar Magnason.

* Grylukvæoi, one of the tracks on this recording, features the wonderful vocal talents of Sam Amidon singing in Icelandic for the first time.

* Draumalandid is a documentary about the exploitation of Iceland’s natural resources and tells a story about the fortunes of a whole nation; the destruction of vast landscapes; and the global economic forces, greater still than any nation, that fuel it all—and for his soundtrack to the film, Valgeir has brought out a heavier set of tools.

* His entire roster of Bedroom Community label mates contributes in some way to the creation of the score: classical composers Nico Muhly and Daníel Bjarnason, industrial wizard Ben Frost, and American folksinger Sam Amidon, along with a host of others, and the small orchestra assembled for the record swells from moments of expansive beauty into massive, surging symphonic force.

* It's harmonies are anxious, pulsing, driven. Not that this is an album lacking in subtlety. Draumalandid the film takes on the delicate task of unmasking the apparent win/win proposition of Iceland’s aluminum smelting boom—clean energy! new jobs and economic growth!—as a false blessing with very real consequences. Likewise, Draumalandid the soundtrack takes global, at times seemingly abstract questions, and offers deeply personal responses.
