Musette? Can you imagine anything more preposterous than an all-female Muse? That would be funny as hell eh? Actually no.... 'Datum' is a CD by a Swedish piano tinkerer guy called Joel Danell. Each piece he's recorded over the years and titled with that days date hence the name of this CD. Embellished periodically with any number of the following; soft guitars, double bass, music box and violin but most pleasingly, the humble old accordion, this sometimes comes across like lovingly executed cafe style music, full of evocative but slightly wistful moods and hopeless romance without ever seeming twee. Other times you're transported to a folk love-in in a forest glade overrun with trilling sounds of nature! Another track sounds like a truly organic Lemon Jelly with a rich foot tappin' jazz dusting.... The press notes offer up some influences and they are totally bob on - add ol' Uncle Eric Satie to the mix, chuck in some gorgeous field recordings then you can imagine the dreamy sadness at work here. Lovely stuff!

What their label says...

For fans of : Penguin Cafe Orchistra , Goldmund , Tape (Sweden).

p*dis is proud to announce the reissue of swedish artist mesette’s debut album “Datum”.

Patiently written down dates, noted with a piano and carefully collected on cassette tapes, one by one. An assiduous attempt to keep books of time, to sketch the events, the landscapes and neighborhoods with melodies and recordings of sound. For several years Joel Danell has been writing songs on a piano, all given the names of dates as if they were diary notes. The kind of notes where the writing, more than the words themselves, recounts for the moment of them being written: times of accumulation where the letters stand close to each other and reach far into the margin, moments of pensiveness where lines have been crossed out and others have been added and moments of excitement where the letters have gained in size and defied the ruling of the sheet.

"Datum" is the retelling of these notes with the help of violin, whistling, guitar, accordion and Dobro, recorded in Blackeberg January 2008. Pieces that recount for an otherwise forgotten day in April, that describe the view from a balcony in a Stockholm suburb in late October, that is a remembrance of the rushing bicycle and the passing landscape in the beginning of June.

“Datum” was originally released by the new swedish label Tona Serenad in Feb, 2009 and distributed in only Sweden and Japan, and sold out in several months. This reissue version has some slight changes in the artwork and includes the cassette version of 9 november from "Carefully Collected Cassette Tapes" as a bonus track. "Carefully Collected Cassette Tapes" is the collection of cassette tapes, carefully recorded over the years by Joel
danell and that became "Datum".
