I'm familiar with Johnny Flynn from his work with the Sussex Wit who I really liked for their Man Aubergine-esque approach to the writing of traditional folk arrangements. The solo material presented here on the 'Sweet William EP' dispense with the radio friendly approach of The Sussex Wit in favour of more classical folksy arrangements. Flynn's voice sounds outstanding especially on opener 'The Mountain is Burning' and the efficient guitar and string arrangements compliment his vocal presence throughout. Part traditional folk, part ancient sea shanty, 'Sweet William' sounds fully of drama and wit. Kinda reminds me of The Bitter Tears, which is a good thing.
