I don't like David Cronenberg's Wife as a band name...it cunjures up images of other rubbish band names I have seen like Sean Beans Legpit or Rumpleforskin (Actually I like that one!). The new LP retains the Fall-esque sound of their other releases, rambling stream of-conscious vocals, tight musicianship and "humourous" lyrics. The first track is called Sweden...and it has a Swedish lyrical breakdown!! Ingenious!! Its a pretty consistent record though, all the tracks have some sort of quality to them and its quite an achievement to sound like the Fall and not get slapped by Mark E Smith, so kudos!!! Its on Blang so get yersen some fags and start ranting at passers by....

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.

What their label says...

Stockport’s “bright sparks” DCW release their second album, Hypnagogues (meaning a drug that induces sleep) a year on from their critically acclaimed debut Bluebeard’s Rooms (BLANG9). The single track “The Fight Song” released in May landed the band a well deserved Marc Riley session on BBC 6 Music where some of the album tracks were aired.  Hypnagogues is a selection of eloquent kitchen sink dramas set to Tom Mayne’s trademark sardonic lyrical humour and the bands bright surf-psych guitars but this time, a distinct country & western spirit haunts the album, particularly with some of the more melancholic folksy tracks such as “In the Limo” and “Desperate Little Man”. BBC London’s Gary Crowley described the first DCW album as “a cross between Clinic and Suicide” but this album demonstrates a deeper respect for Jonathan Richman and the Velvets. David Cronenberg’s Wife was formed in 2004, following songwriter Tom Mayne’s move from Stockport to London. The other members of the band are Stuart Saunderson (drums), Thom Alder (guitar/violin), Rhi Tucker (keyboard), Mark Watts (guitar) & Ian Button (bass).  After over 100 gigs in London and across the UK – supporting the likes of Wreckless Eric and “Krautrock” Can legend Damo Suzuki – David Cronenberg’s Wife (DCW for short) signed to the East London independent Blang label in 2007. Summer 2007 saw their first single release on limited edition vinyl & download (I Couldn’t Get Off), followed in Spring 2008 by another vinyl release My Best Friend’s Going Out With a Girl I Like, that drew great reviews from Music Week and Drowned in Sound. Their third single Runaway Pram (download only) was released along with their debut album Bluebeard’s Rooms in August 2008 to major acclaim.
