The Slits were the first - and still the best - all woman band who bent all the rules. They have been a key influence on subsequent generations of women musicians, from Courtney Love, Bjork and ‘Riot Grrrl’ to today's diary-like singers such as Lily Allen and Kate Nash.

The Slits were one of the first punk bands - and one of the last to make a record. On its release in 1979, the record was regarded as a five-star triumph. The pioneering mix of the band’s punk roots and legendary reggae producer Dennis Bovell created an extraordinary masterpiece that ranked alongside other 1979 ground-breaking post-punk classics such as PIL’s Metal Box, Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division and the Pop Group’s Y albums.

Thirty years on, Cut is still lionised as a landmark post-punk album.
