We got a CD by Electric Assembly this week. The White Splinter EP is a self released job limited to 100 copies. They boldly describe their sound as The Velvet Underground plays Boards of Canada produced by Kevin Shields arranged by Sun Ra listened to by Syd Barrett. You gotta have massive balls to say shit like that I reckon. So far (it's been for about 10 minutes) it's all instrumental and it there's definite elecments of post rock/shoegaze in there. I can hear bits of MBV in the 19 minute track called 11:43... It builds up quite nicely and slowly til it' hits a big fuzy noise wall and ends up in a big pile of bone crunched up crochets and quavers. It's really good actually. As far as long mantric pieces of post rock go, it's got a groove and you get sucked into its warm melodic charm. The vocals arrive in track 3 and its making me think of Spiritualized. There's one more track but I'll leave that as a surprise!! The highlight of the EP though is the 20 minute long beast that is 11:43... I reckon you'll be needing a bit of that one!
