this is the same record that has been kicking around my house for the past year or two but in different packaging. its completely and utterly wonderful. fantastic slabs of eerie australian pop with nods to the chills, alastair galbraith, the cannanes, grandaddy. anyone with interest in 80's/90's underground psychedelic pop bands will also find lots to admire here. Highly recommended.

Not aware of much available information on Aussie dreamfolksters The Ancients except I like the uber minimal style of their self-titled CD sleeve and they're mates with Minimum Chips. Something about them reminds me of a more stoned & homely Simian, slow-strummed, languid acoustic guitars and then there's this gorgeous psychedelic element that doesn't sound remotely contrived (unlike that old forgotten Manchester clan) Percussion is stark, rolling gently in the background as these lazy guitars kick out dinky, sleepy shapes that hover & fade, the vocals come flowing, easy, dreamy & mellow, so many ace little things happening that aren't apparent when battling against the constant chatter in this office. You need to privately immerse yourself in these organic, peaceful grooves. The production throughout is warm and enveloping, perfectly suited to the gently shambling star-gazing nature of the music which oft reminds me of a divine cross between the NY's legendary Eggs & the spaced early 00's psychedelia of, say, Parsley Sound. Further discussion with old timer Philthy conjures up memories of The Essex Green & Ladybug Transistor but I must stress these guys aren't on some rose tinted retro trip, rather just producing passionate, lovely timeless songs that resonate in my head! Pretty limited, all hand stamped, die cut recycled card sleeves

What their label says...
The latest Moteer release marks the start of a series of releases housed in hand assembled, hand stamped generic moteer sleeves. More limited than the usual moteer runs they also give us a chance to experiment with music that could be seen to fall outside of the normal moteer remit. The first of these releases comes from Melbourne collective The Ancients. Fronted and galvanised by Jonathan Michell and backed up by a whole slew of Melbourne it musicians the music of The Ancients first came to our attention in the Australian winter of 2005, a self titled cd came back home with us and became regular listening for the next couple of years. When we approached Jon with the idea of releasing something for ourselves we hit upon the idea a collection of songs off the original release coupled with a batch of new songs Jon had been agonising over in the years between last contact. And so confusingly we have the second self titled Ancients release. Drenched in winter sunshine this batch of songs is the sound of The Kinks if they were the house band at One Eyed Jacks. All sorts of odd instruments swirl around, sometimes serving up surf up era beach boys, sometimes giving us something more English and pastoral. It's beautiful, skewed pop music all held together by Jonathan Michells distinctive delivery. Something a tiny bit different for the label, The Ancients still possesses all the charm and fragile nature that we hold dear at the label and is truly a release that we're proud to finally share with you.
