It's simple, yeah? Sax + Ruins = Sax Ruins. Having lost his longtime bass pal a couple of years back Tatsuya Yoshida has given up on his solo drum jaunts and recruited a game chap by the name of Ryoko Ono to play the old classics with the power of wind rather than the rumble of bass. The Zeuhl-prog of Magma and the like which formed a large part of the inspiration for what Ruins do always had a clear jazz influence so it's probably more of a logical step that it initially sounds and I'm certainly finding it highly pleasing in its complex insanity. Imagine the sound of someone cutting up a load of Naked City records and sticking them back together at random and you'll have some idea of the effect. Yawiquo is CD only on Ipecac.

What their label says...

*  This is the debut album from the new band featuring Japanese avant-garde institution RUINS’ founder member and band leader Tatsuya Yoshida.

This is material from the RUINS’ extensive back catalogue reworked & rewritten for drums and multi-layered saxophone.

Ruins have previously collaborated with, and released albums with DEREK BAILEY and KEIJI HAINO.

Ruins have previously released records on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, Skin Graft, Ipecac & Magaibutsu Limited.

“We can only thank the heavens above that a band like Ruins exists to show the world how weak other music is in comparison.” Dusted

SAX RUINS is a new band formed by Tatsuya Yoshida (drums) and Ono Ryoko (alto Sax) to play RUINS’ songs in 2006. The duo restructure complicated and inscrutable compositions with orchestration achieved with multiplexed recording of the saxophone. Thus creating a huge sound like a Big Band playing "progressive Jazz Core".

YOSHIDA TATSUYA is one of the most innovative drummer/composer/improviser in Japanese avant-garde music scene. Yoshida is the founder and drummer of The Ruins. Yoshida crates a new, complex and concentrated style,
incorporating the expressiveness of prog-rock, the freedom of jazz and the energy of punk with RUINS.

ONO RYOKO is actively working as an improvisational musician in Nagoya, Japan. she also participates in jazz, rock, funk, rhythm & blues and hip hop bands, and be part of various recording sessions.
