Hey there music fan, do you like Sunn O)))? I hope you do because they've just rubbed their first full-on, proper new album in four years all over your face, going "Mmmm, sniff that, taste that, it's our new CD and everyone's saying it's the best one ever and you're going to buy it because it's sooo-oo-oooo good". Well yeah, it is pretty great actually and definitely their most expansive and ambitious album so far with hefty lists of additional instrumentation and musicians on each track to augment their two man doom machine (four if you count sidekick Oren Ambarchi and ex-Mayhem man/tree Attila Csihar who sings on about half of the album). Some random thoughts: some of the production touches are amazing, Csihar's vocals are far more tolerable than most of those on Black One, I wish I had Flight of the Behemoth on vinyl, the last track is completely beautiful. Maybe it is their best release, I dunno.. We'll see when it's had time to sink in but I'm definitely 100% in for a vinyl of Monoliths & Dimensions when that eventually arrives. They do like to tease us with their fan-fleecing multiple editions, the absolute FUCKERS.

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.

What their label says...

*  SUNN O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album after 10 years of existence. Work that spanned a year and a half resulted in their most intense, mature work to date.

*  Recorded at various points throughout 2007 & 2008 by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer, it features an array of other players including longtime collaborators Attila Csihar and Oren Ambarchi, and other luminaries such as Julian Priester (notable for work with Sun Ra and Herbie Hancock), and slow music God-father Dylan Carlson of Earth.

*  In addition, arrangements were handled by noted composer Eyvind Kang who has worked with John Zorn, Bill Frisell and Mike Patton amongst others. Fleshing out the usual Sunn lineup is an upright bass trio, french & English horns, a harp and flute duo, piano, brass, reed & string ensembles. Despite this, this is not "SUNN with strings" or "metal meets orchestra" material, this is something  altogether more exciting.

*  Released on CD and lavishly packaged double LP.
*  Cover art by eminent artist Richard Serra.

*  Tracklist: 01. Aghatha (17:34) 02. Big Church (09:43) 03. Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia) (10:02) 04. Alice (16:21)
