Hannu is back with his 2nd album on the ole Kesh label ran by Televise guru and head honcho Simon Scott. Hannu's previous album was a lovely mess of melodic electronica and electro acoustic gubbins all lovingly crafted together like a well laid out dining table. Mmm... Dining... We like a bit of fine dining here.... Hintergarden continues the lovelyness with some amazingly lush melodies and ideas crammed together. There's plenty of twinkles to even give Colleen a run for her money (she is the current queen of twinkles). It reminds me a little of Four Tet's 'Pause' album but without the beats and with more of an experimental feel, maybe a bit of mid period Remote Viewer in there 'n all. The whole album has quite a majestic feel to it and for those who like bedroom electronica then I reckon this is a must have. The more I hear it the more I'm sucked into the lovelyness that smothers each song with it's syrupy cleverness and general brilliance. Yes I like it. It may have something to do with the fact that half of Isan have produced it. Also the aforementioned label head honcho helps out with some of the playing on it and additional production. Apparently the label are more proud of this than any other release and I can see why. It's really very good!!

Love this record? Hate it? Tell us.

What their label says...

Hannu lives in Helsinki, Finland. His surname is unpronounceable to non Finno-ugric language speakers so prefers to simply be known as Hannu. His musical background includes a free-grindcore band Abyss at the age of 11 plus lots of teenage experiments with four-track recorders and synthesizers.

Hintergarten is his second album (the follow up to his “worms in my piano” debut album in 2007) features eleven tracks that see a broadening of the sound he stunned us with on his debut and a development of his song writing encompassing experimental electronic textures with organic instruments and found sounds.

His source of inspiration is nature, landscape, weather, light, places, friends, etc. His music captures a mood or a feeling of a place, to take the listener somewhere for a moment (not necessarily always a comfortable place).

This album is another very personal statement from him and it is mostly recorded at home in Helsinki but some of the songs utilize sounds culled from four-track recordings he made as a teenager in his home town in Northern Finland and field recordings.

Produced by Simon Scott the ex slowdive drummer who runs Kesh recordings (signed to Miasmah recordings as a recording artist) who proudly added additional instrumentation and vocals to this magical album. Simon thinks it is the best album release on Kesh so far.

Hintergarten was mastered by Antony Ryan of Isan at RedRedPaw in Sweden.
