The new Skull Defekts album on Important looks pretty swish, living up to its moniker The Temple with a big totemic pyramidic thing adorning the cover in pretty pastels. I was anticipating a bit of a heavy dronefest here but they've completely overturned my expectations with a fairly straightforward and accessible hard rock sound on the first couple of tunes here, coming off somewhere between Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails.. Actually it also reminds me of that old Bristol band Sunna who Business Lady and I were discussing last week, but don't hold that against them. The double LP/CD is split pretty much right down the middle between those sort of tunes and the tribal, experimental rock/drone workouts I was expecting and for my money they do a better job with the latter style although Brian's pretty keen on the rocky numbers. They're obviously a talented lot and the album sounds as though it deserves more in depth listening than we've got time to give it just now.. Brian's just said 'I like this' about four times. I think he likes it.
