What their label says...

Cumbia! The infectious, party-friendly Latin American rhythm keeps on grooving – from dancefloors in Mexico to cool-hunting clubs across Europe. Cumbia's blogosphere love and gringo attention has skyrocketed in the past year, but there has been no go-to album – until now. Enter El Hijo de la Cumbia, a young talent with a long & respected history in the Latin American cumbia circuits. This 23-year-old musician hails from the San Martin barrio outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina. His name means 'Cumbia's Son.' Friends call him Chimango. HDC has performed with – and made beats for – popular cumbia acts like Pesadilla or Grupo Maravilla. He rocks street cred with cumbia sonidera crowds in Mexico, Los Angeles, and NYC (bodegas across all these cities stock sonidera CDs with his beats). Even with that success, a few years ago HDC decided to go solo in pursuit of his unique vision. The result is Freestyle de Ritmos. This is the new cumbia scene's first major artist album. Unlike newcomers who use the sound to spice up their electronica beats, El Hijo reinvents the tropical genre from within, drawing on his dozen years of cumbia history and moving forward with a rhythmic 'freestyle'. His innovative approach incorporates hiphop, reggae, dub, and even a touch of drum & bass, in his core cumbia sound. He's long been known among latino cumbia fans but now, with a sold-out 12” for San Francisco's Bersa Discos and his MySpace game on lock, El Hijo has received kudos from DJs worldwide, from Russ Jones to Discobelle bloggers and Maga Bo – not too mention those Mexican fans in Brooklyn. One listen to his debut album and you'll hear that he's one of the most authentic and rule-breaking cumbia artists. Freestyle is mostly instrumental, letting El Hijo's rich musicality and energetic beats shine, aided by sound FX, a dubwise mentality, DJ scratches, and moments of psychedelia. Argentine reggae queen Alika graces the mic on track 4 “Para Bailar”. Chimango's belief in music as a powerful force for positivity can be heard throughout. If it's straight-up cumbiambero dancefloor bangers you want, try tracks 7, 3, and 4. For beautiful deep tunes, with reggae-influenced low end, head to tracks 2 and 13.
