Old Norman AOTW stars Heavy Winged are back with a new CD of loose dirge rock & no wave drone, 'Spreading Centre'. I'm having to review it on fairly muted headphones that have fallen off a giraffe's head from the ark. Giraffes like R&B I reckon, Beyonce & shit. I'm unsure what animal would care for two dense, nihilistic slabs of stumbling screeing noise underpinned by a flayed & hateful drum onslaught. I reckon a bad ol' grizzly might dig it loads. I do, their approximation of noise rock is pretty darn impressive, the racket teased from these guitars is a right dystopian rumble & wail of malevolent discontent. This is head music for folk who don't eat their greens. Turn it up, grandma. CD only thru Release the Bats.

Heavy Winged began in the fall of 2004 in Brooklyn, New York. The three members (Jed Bindeman, Ryan Hebert and Brady Sansone) hadall gone to college together and afterwards found themselves living in the same neighborhood in Brooklyn. Ryan and Jed had previously playedtogether in the band Ivo Shandor, and the idea to jam with brady had been discussed for awhile before it actually happened. originally they tried tocompose songs, but quickly realized that the sprawling improvised sessions they were having sounded much better than the compositions they wereworking on. The band made sure to record every jam session in full, direct to Ryan's half-broken 4 track cassette recorder. The band performed liveonly one time before Jed announced that he was moving across the country to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2006. At this time the band wasno longer able to record as fervently as before, but the archival releases continued to trickle out, with label and press interest only growing withtime. Ryan decided to move back home to Windsor, Vermont in 2007, splitting the band between three states. Despite this, Heavy Winged comestogether twice a year to embark on short tours and record new material along the way.The members of Heavy Winged all play in other bands, as well. In Portland, Jed plays in Eternal Tapestry (along with his brother Nick, ofJackie O Motherfucker and Tunnels) and Bloodbiker. In Brooklyn, Brady plays in Lonely Ghost, Magdyn Osh and Parlor Wit. In Windsor, Ryanplays in Lilum and The Jobz. There have been CD and/or LP releases on labels such as Three Lobed, Not Not Fun, Archive, Trensmat and many others, all of which aresold out. A brand new collaborative album with legendary shoegaze/drone group Windy & Carl was just released on the Music Fellowship label, as apicture disc lp with cd.Releases planned for 2009 on Aurora Borealis, RTB, Archive and a full collaborative lp with Inca Ore for Not Not Fun.
