What their label says...
Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon (formerly known as Snowmachine) are Aaron Hurley (vocals, guitars, piano) and Scott McLaughlin (bass, guitar, cello, vibraphone, electronics). The duo hail from the west of Ireland but currently reside in Northern England. “Through A Forest Only” is their second release following their acclaimed album “In A Light” (Deserted Village) and builds on that albums ‘acoustic meets electronic’ aesthetic by adding more instruments, electricity and percussion. This is folk music only in the sense that human beings are performing it…
Aaron and Scott have both played in United Bible Studies and Agitated Radio Pilot, whilst Aaron is also a member of Cubs and Scott has collaborated Autumn Grieve. The “Through A Forest Only” EP features contributions from Barry Hurley on percussion and drumming duties, Anne Marie Deacy (Mirakil Whip) on accordion, keyboards and spoken word, David Colohan (Agitated Radio Pilot) weighs in with some guitars on “A Web Emerging From Fog” and other vocals/spoken word contributions are provided by Aaron Coyne (Mirakil Whip/Yawning Chasm) and by Andrea Fitzpatrick.
Never staying in the same place for very long in either name, geography or style, yet consistently evolving and engaging, Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon have amped up their acoustic aesthetic, plugged into the grid and entered a new soundworld featuring live percussion, sonic sorcery and plaintive singing wrapped in warm cello and vibraphonic action. Their “Through A Forest Only” extended player for Rusted Rail features twenty minutes of delicate, driven, dreamy and haunted hymns on a 3 inch EP in a handmade sleeve.
