What their label says...

Silent Beef is the second album by DIY home recordist/songwriter Jack Shirt (aka Christos Fanaras). Recorded between 2007 and 2008 it features 11 tracks at a total running time of 29.17 minutes. The compositional tools are guitars, keys, glockenspiel, various effects and electronics, whistlings, mouth noises and plenty of vocals, although not many lyrics; The Cheapest Lunchbreak and the Work Song are the only two tracks with lyrical cadence while The Silent Beef (track 9) is made out of multiple vocal drones that gradually introduce themselves as a transitional element between the previous tunes.
Sonically the album draws on music ranging from Gyorgy Ligeti’s discordant vocal inflections and compositions, to the obscure tempo manoeuvres of Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica and The Shaggs’ Philosophy of the World, from the nonchalant songwriting of post Pink Floyd Syd Barrett, to the delay drenched vocals and cheap Casio orchestrations of The Space Lady (aka Suzy Soundz) and the idiosyncratic, one –man home recordings of R. Stevie Moore. The occasionally unusual time signatures and slightly dissonant guitar and keyboard harmonies also suggest some loose Prog Rock tendencies.

ScratchMyBackRecords
ScracthMyBackRecords is a small DIY label operated by Christos Fanaras (aka Jack Shirt) from his North London flat. The label was set up in January 2008 as a facilitator for Jack Shirt’s self titled debut album release, a limited CDR edition of initially 30 copies. SMBR stockists so far are Rough Trade, Norman Records and Lik Neon.

Jack Shirt
Jack Shirt is the recording name that Christos Fanaras adopted for his first solo project, a personal exploration of song craftsmanship and composition that started in 2005. He has previously performed and recorded as songwriter and instrumentalist in London band The Thinking People Society (Paid for with Tips LP, 2005), while at the same time playing the drums for post-punk outfit, Do or Die. Other projects that he is currently involved with include the Mothlite live band (Southern Records), Elsa Drake and domestic performance group The Tupperware Party.
