I'd always assumed iLiKETRAiNS were shit, probably because of their silly name and the fact that I've never seen them on any decent bills despite the fact they're from around here. So finally I get to hear them on The Christmas Tree Ship and, much to my surprise, they're actually pretty good and do a completely different type of music to what I'd expected. I'm reliably informed that their tracks generally have Michael Gira-style vocals on but the five tracks here are entirely instrumental, painting Godspeedy aural pictures apparently on the subject of a shipping disaster. Post-rock does love a good disaster to be all epic about, doesn't it. You get about a half hour of music plus a DVD of a similar length for less than a fiver, can't beat that for value.. We're not entirely sure what's on the DVD but Phil suspects that the CD contains the soundtrack to a short film that's on there. Either way, you can't go far wrong with this evocative weepfest.

What their label says...
The tale behind the waves of sound is well known to children in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. Descendants of immigrants who worked in the forests and on the ships that took timber down Lake Missouri to Chicago, and city dwellers of Chicago all know about Captain Santa (Herman E. Scheunemann) and his proud, but old and infirm sailing rigger (the Rouse Simmons). All were lost in 1912 in a late November storm as they made a dash to the Christmas berths to sell thousands of Christmas trees to the Chicagoans, as they had done for thirty years past. Steamships were taking over by then, and The Christmas Ships made few trips after that year. The world had changed and worse was to come · I LIKE TRAINS have created their own singular world sitting in delightfully dark, cultish contrast to the rest of the music scene. Their musical intentions are far removed from the traditional clichés of the medium, yet through their spine tingling anthems they have earned a huge following of dedicated and passionate fans. · With the release of their debut album last October through Beggars Banquet, their reputation has extended far and wide, out of Leeds, into Europe and across to America gaining them great critical acclaim. · I LIKE TRAINS will be touring the UK during December. The band are currently working on their second long player. · Limited edition digipack (1000 copies) containing five track CD single, 20 minute film on DVD and hand-numbered insert.
