Onto Spartak on the Hellosquare label of Australia. This is their debut album and it's produced by Taylor Deupree of 12K fame. This is sort of avant jazz/ electronica. Lots of nice atmospheric sounds going on here. Very cinematic indeed! It all sounds kind of improvised as well... like they've just gone into a studio and jammed for a bit and then released it. Sunstrokes has a sort of dubby post punk thing going on with the electronic atmospherics doodling around in the background. Works very well actually and it's a very fresh sounding album. Can't think of many folks doing this sort of thing and considering it's jazz influenced (and you probably know where I stand on jazz) I have to admit to quite liking this. The production is excellent as well, the sound is full yet sparse sounding which is always a great achievement to make for any producer. The music does noodle on at times and not seem to go anywhere but listen to it as a whole while you're not doing anything else and it makes a lot more sense. Our copies of Tales From The Colony Room come with a bonus 3" CD featuring remixes of Ostpolitik by spartak as well featuring mixes by M. Rosner, Filfla and Steinbruchel. Lovely!

What their label says...

the debut album for this Canberra duo featuring Shoeb Ahmad and Evan Dorrian is also hellosQuare's first on CD. this seven track album spans an emotional landscape that encompasses violence and calm, sleep and tension in a genuine collision of melted jazz, microtonal exploration and post punk attitude. 'tales...' was concieved after the spartak malaysia/singapore tour in january/february 2008 while being mastered by Taylor Deupree of 12k fame.
